On the 18th June, the government announced a £1 billion “Catch-Up” fund in order to tackle the impact of lost teaching time as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Unfortunately, the NTP won’t be launching until October half-term at the earliest, rather than in September when it would have likely had its greatest impact.
Distributed to schools based on the number of pupils and can be spent in whichever way they see fit. (The EEF have published guidance on how to spend the funding, which includes one-to-one and small group tuition)
This is split into 3 keys areas:
provided to state schools to substitute one-to-one and small group tuition
for schools in the most disadvantaged areas to employ trained graduates to provide intense catch-up sessions
for pupils “without a GCSE grade 4 or above in English and/or Maths” for small group tuition
Tutoring agencies will need to apply to the NTP in order to be included on the list of trusted providers. These positions will be awarded based on their experience of working with schools / disadvantaged pupils, their quality, scalability, training and safeguarding practises and impact monitoring. (This list has currently not been published).
The Tutors’ Association is the only professional membership body for tutoring and the wider supplementary education sector in the UK. With the NTP trusted providers list not currently published, it is recommended that schools utilise trusted agencies who are a member of the TTA.
Due to funding not being released until October half term at the earliest, it is expected that the tuition industry will need to provide 200,000 hours of tuition each week. It’s important when choosing an agency that you check they are established and can meet your schools’ needs.
Don’t wait until the funding is released in October half term, many schools will have already started to secure top trusted tutoring agencies in preparation for the new school year. It’s highly recommended to start talks this summer to ensure your desired tuition team is reserved for your school.
