Heard the government talking about closing the learning gap and school catch-up programmes?
It’s no secret that both students and teachers have had one uncertain year and now with school reopening for the new academic year it’s time to get back into a routine and help students get back on track with their studies.
But where are teacher supposed to find these extra hours for much needed small group and one to one sessions?
On the 18th June, the government announced a £1 billion “Catch-Up” fund in order to tackle the impact of lost teaching time as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown which is due to be released in the October half-term.
Distributed to schools based on the number of pupils and can be spent in whichever way they see fit. (The EEF have published guidance on how to spend the funding, which includes one-to-one and small group tuition)
This is split into 3 keys areas:
provided to state schools to substitute one-to-one and small group tuition
for schools in the most disadvantaged areas to employ trained graduates to provide intense catch-up sessions
for pupils “without a GCSE grade 4 or above in English and/or Maths” for small group tuition
