Q. What is your name and what subjects and levels do you tutor?
My name is Amelia and I tutor humanities subjects up to A Level standard, specialising in History and English. I’m also about to start teaching Maths and Sciences up to GCSE standard.
Q. Tell us a bit about what interested you about tutoring and how you got into it.
I became interested in tutoring because it was a rewarding part time job. Unlike many other opportunities available to students, this gave me the chance to make a real difference in the lives of young people. The flexibility and opportunity to put my academic work to use also appealed.
Q. What has been the most rewarding part of tutoring for you so far?
Seeing students understand a particularly difficult topic for the first time is especially rewarding. There is often a moment where something just clicks for a student and it is wonderful to see. This doesn’t mean that teaching is complete, and the lesson still needs plenty of reinforcement, but if someone has been struggling it can be really rewarded to watch as progress is made.
Q.What do you feel has been most impactful for your students?
Showing them how far they have come is always useful. Comparing an essay written at the start of the tutoring partnership to an example of their recent work can clearly demonstrate how much work they have done.
Q. Finally, can you tell us a story of a particular referral with an especially positive and exciting outcome?
Watching a pupil who has fallen out of love with a subject fall back in love with it is always a pleasure to watch. When they start asking questions about studying it further and get excited about that prospect, you know you have done your job well.
