Mathematics is, in essence, not about finding solutions to equations or calculating the velocity of a projectile. Although those are useful consequences, mathematics is about discovering structure, finding deep connections and understanding why they exist. As a first year mathematics student at King’s College London, this is why I chose to study the subject. A favourite quote of mine, by Maryam Mirzakhani, says that “The beauty of mathematics only shows itself to its more patient followers”. The rewarding feeling of success after battling with a challenging problem is exactly what makes me pursue mathematics, and I hope to instil that same feeling in my students when they overcome the challenge of a problem to uncover the beauty of mathematics.
