Here at Manning’s, we believe in offering tuition that meets the needs of all our students. We understand that children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) may require a unique, tailored approach to tutoring sessions. With years of experience working with SEND students, our team of tutors is dedicated to helping them achieve their target grades.
Our team is comprised of experienced tutors who are trained to create lesson plans that will help students express themselves more clearly and work to the student’s communication strengths.
Our tutors are taught the elements of cognition, types of cognition, and how to approach teaching students with cognition and learning needs.
Our tutors are trained in how SEMH needs impact how students learn, how to talk about mental health in an appropriate manner, and how to plan lessons and sessions accordingly.
Our tutors are taught the different sensory and physical needs that students can have and how to support them.
The graduated approach is a highly recommended strategy when working with SEND students. Our tutors use this assess, plan, do, and review cycle to keep students engaged and comfortable.
Our tutors ensure that all tutoring sessions have a supportive, welcoming environment. They understand that building trust with the student is invaluable.
We understand that effectively working with SEND students requires communication between tutors, parents, and teachers. Our tutors are happy to work as part of an educational team to help the student maximize their potential.
We are happy to tell you more about how we support SEND students and answer any questions you may have!
SEND stands for special educational needs and disabilities. This includes sensory or physical needs (such as visual impairment); social, emotional, and mental health needs (such as anxiety and depression); speech, language and communication needs (such as autism); and cognitive and learning needs (such as SpLD and MLD).
Tutors take a CPD certified course that walks through a variety of modules teaching tutors about different types of needs and how to create an environment for SEND students to succeed. They are taught how to integrate the graduated approach into their tutoring sessions.
This four-step cycle is the recommended approach to meeting students’ educational needs.
Step 1: Assess
The student’s educational team (parents/tutors/teachers) consider and discuss the student’s educational needs.
Step 2: Plan
A plan on how to best support the student is made and communicated clearly to the student and the team.
Step 3: Do
The plan is implemented by the team and the student.
Step 4: Review
The plan’s effectiveness will be reviewed regularly to see if any changes need to be made to the current plan.
